Introduction:

Welcome to Department of Haematology and Blood Bank, a progressive & dynamic centre for basic & translational sciences, clinical research, patient care, undergraduate & post graduate teaching. Here clinicians, scholars, investigators & post graduate trainees work together to harness the power & resources of Sheikh Zayed hospital in pursuit of excellence.

Department is headed by Prof Mona Aziz Gilani (FCPS Haematology). She has arguably made some of the most influential & much needed changes in Department of Haematology. She is currently Head of Department hematology & in charge blood bank.

Today the Department of Haematology and Blood Bank comprises of four full time faculty members, more than 10 post graduate trainees, 1 medical officer and 3 senior house officers & support staff including technologists & technicians.

The Department of Haematology and Blood Bank is conducting all routine and some special haematology tests and Blood Bank services for Shaikh Zayed Hospital and works in 3 shifts to give a 24/7 cover of services to hospital patients, even on gazetted holidays.

Functions of Department are as follows:

• To treat all types of hematological disorders, coagulation disorders and non-cancerous blood diseases.
• Providing state of art services in Blood Bank for transfusion as facilities of Plateletpheresis, plasmapheresis and component preparation are also available for the patients.
• There are referrals to department from all over Pakistan. Department also provides consultancy services for indoor patients (24/7) and OPD patients 3 days a week.
• The department provides training of M.Phil Haematology , FCPS Haematology, MD, MPhil, MS of surgical and medical specialties, FCPS Medicine and Haematology part II students as elective rotations from other institutions, BSc. Medical laboratory technology students of institute of nursing and health sciences and laboratory assistant classes enrolled by Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore.
• Department of Haematology has hosted The National PSH Conference twice i.e. in 2007,2012.
• Department of Haematology has organized many seminars, lectures, walks, PSH Lahore chapter meetings and quarterly assessments over last 18 years.

• Complete Blood Count
• PT/APTT (mixing studies)
• D-Dimer
• ESR
• Bone Marrow Biopsy
• Special Staining on Blood and Bone Marrow
• Plasmapheresis and Leukopheresis
• Platelet Aphresis
• Therapeutic Phlebotomy
• Direct and Indirect antiglobulin test
• Grouping and cross matching of blood (tube and gel method)
• Preparation of blood components (FFP, PRBC, Cryoprecipitate, Single donor platelets)
• Testing of Donors' Blood for Malaria, HBV, HCV, HIV, Syphilis by CLIA method
• Indoor patient care in medical ward and private rooms
• OPD for Haematology cases 3 times a week that includes Platelet clinic on Tuesday, General Haematology on Wednesday and Anaemia clinic on Friday.
