Introduction

The Paediatric Surgery Department at Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan is a specialized unit dedicated to providing high-quality surgical care to newborns, infants and children. The department started functioning in 1998, initially in the Pediatric Medicine department with five beds and in 2017 it was shifted to a new location having 22 beds. Our department comprises of a well-trained professional team of skilled surgeons, experienced nurses, and support staff, specialized in pediatrics, working together to diagnose, manage, and treat an extensive range of surgical conditions in young patients.

Our department offers a comprehensive range of surgical services, including corrective procedures for congenital anomalies, such as anorectal malformation, hernias, and urological problems. We also provide surgical treatment for traumatic injuries, tumors and other surgical conditions.

Our team of Pediatric surgeons and healthcare professionals are committed to ensure the best possible outcomes for our young patients while providing compassionate and family-centered care.

Minor operations

  1. Incision and drainage of abscesses.
  2. Circumcision.
  3. Excision of Polydactyly.
  4. Rectal polypectomy.
  5. Anal cutback.
  6. Lymph node biopsy.
  7. Injection sclerotherapy for prolapsed rectum and haemangiomas.
  8. Supra pubic catheterization.
  9. Debridement of burns & wounds.
  10. Chest intubations for pneumothorax and empyema.
  11. Release of tongue tie.
  12. Peripheral and umbilical vein cut down.

Intermediate operations

  1. Inguinal and umbilical hernia repair
  2. Orchidopexy
  3. Colostomy and closure of colostomy
  4. Hypospadias repair
  5. Vesicostomy & vesicolithotomy

  7. Management of complex injuries and splenic trauma

  5. Repair of oesphageal atresia with tracheo-oesophageal fistula
  6. Oesophageal replacement
  7. Repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia and eventration
  8. Cardiomyotomy for achalasia cardia
  9. Fundioplication for Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER)
  10. Portoenterostomies for biliary atresia & choledochal cyst
  11. Internal drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts
  12. Pyeloplasty for PUJO
  13. Ureteric re-implantation
  14. Nephrectomy for Wilm`s tumour & non-functioning kidney
  15. Repair of ectopia vesicae & epispadias
  16. Hypospadias repair
  17. Laparotomy for complex abdominal condition like, Intestinal atresia, Intestinal obstruction, Gastrointestinal duplication, fecal fistula, trauma and firearm injuries.

Endoscopic procedures

  1. Sigmoidoscopy
  2. Cystoscopy and fulguration of posterior urethral valves
  3. Laparoscopy diagnostic and therapeutic (appendectomy & undescended testes)

Teaching and training program

The department encourages a learning environment for researchers and trainees. Grand teaching rounds by senior faculty with academic discussion are carried out regularly. A weekly case discussion by a resident is presented and weekly Journal club is carried out helps trainees to keep their knowledge Up to date. Monthly inter departmental clinical meetings with Paediatric surgical units of other teaching hospitals of Lahore is also a regular feature of the department. Residents and faculty actively participate in Paediatric Surgery conferences, symposia and workshops.

Our department is fully recognized for FCPS and MS program.
